Portugese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been given a two-year jail term by the Spanish authorities in the tax fraud charge. The former Real Madrid superstar though, will not be serving any time in jail, but will have to pay a hefty fine of 19 million euros. He was accused and found guilty of tax evasion worth 14.7 million euros between 2011 and 2014.
Given it was his first offense, there would be no jail time for the 33-year-old. As per the Spanish laws, and individual would be open to custodial sentence should he commit a similar offense during this period.
Right before the start of World Cup 2018, the then Real Madrid star had accepted the prison sentence. Many claim that the failure of Real Madrid to protect Ronaldo in this case was the major reason behind his exit from the club. The Portugese skipper completed a move to Italian giants Juventus earlier this month for a reported fee of 100 million euros.
His incident is similar to Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. The Argentine, and his father were given 21 and 15 months jail-term for tax fraud worth 4.1 million euros. Though, neither of them served time in prison as they paid the amount with additional fine.
The duo were two of the 10 players shortlisted for the Men's Best Player Award of 2018. Ronaldo is in contention to win for a third consecutive year after being included among the 10 finalists for 2018. He broke many records during the course of Real Madrid's triumphant 2017-18 UCL campaign.
Messi, who enjoyed a stellar season with Barcelona after guiding them to the domestic double, is also among the front-runners to win the award. But, however, Ronaldo and Messi, who have dominated the sport's individual sporting awards for a decade, were knocked out with their respective national teams in the Round of 16 at Russia.
Mbappe, who won the Young Player of the Tournament in World Cup 2018 is also part of the lineup. He is also joined by his World Cup winning team-mates Antoine Griezmann and Raphael Varane.
The shortlist was compiled by a panel of FIFA legends, including Brazil legend Ronaldo Nazario, former England boss Fabio Capello and former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.
