US 2020 Elections: Germany, France, EU, Hungary react to US electoral dilemma while UK stays silent

As threats of legal challenges from Donald Trump mount against Joe Biden's campaign due to the US president's perceived allegations of 'electoral fraud' in states like Arizona, Pennsylvania and Michigan, the German governmen  has urged the US leader to refrain from pouring oil on the fire of an already tense electoral situation.

Trump has already dispatched his team of lawyers to battle ground states of Pennsylvania and Arizona and has reportedly told his aides he won't concede as he has been "robbed of the election".

His campaign allege Democrat controlled Pennsylvania electoral officials have been using votes from dead people and also double voting to clean off his lead against Biden.

While the UK government has refused to wade into the electoral situation in the US that might see Biden win the election but Trump refuse to vacate office, Germany has urged Trump to end his claim that the American election was fraudulent, urging the president and his followers to stop “pouring oil” on the tense situation in the US and noting that “decent losers” were vital to upholding democracy.

The German foreign minister, Heiko Maas, said: “America is more than a one-man show. Anyone who continues to pour oil on the fire in a situation like this is acting irresponsibly. Now is the time to keep a cool head until an independently determined result is available.”

“In order for the result – which has not yet been determined – to be accepted, everyone must first show restraint. Decent losers are more important for the functioning of a democracy than radiant winners.”

Maas said he expected that once the election result was settled, “the USA will probably not return to the international stage with full energy for the time being”, but he added: “The world needs the USA as a force for order, not as a factor of chaos.”

The UK will face a dilemma if Trump refuses to concede defeat and Biden claims victory, since it is traditional for the UK to congratulate the victor.

Reports from the UK say Britain could continue to keep quiet on the issue until all legal challenges by the Trump campaign are exhausted.

The UK shadow justice minister, David Lammy, said: “Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab’s silence as Donald Trump attempts to undermine the American people’s right to free and fair elections is a national disgrace. We must have the courage to stand up for democracy whoever attacks it. No exceptions.”

Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French foreign minister, said he had faith in the US institutions validating the result, adding that even if Biden was elected, the US and the EU “will not return to the status that prevailed before, to a kind of good old days in the transatlantic relationship. The world has moved in four years. Europe is trying to become a power unto itself, instead of relying on US support.”

He described the US election as “a historic vote, in terms of the tension and the size of the turnout”.

The Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, in his own remarks on Friday suggested the US would not be in a position to lecture other countries on democracy after this election.

“If things happened in Hungary, like over there, then here, I don’t know, the sky would have fallen. It’s unimaginable,” the Hungarian leader said.

Global coronavirus report: WHO chief self-isolates as Germany starts 'wave breaker' lockdown

Global coronavirus report: WHO chief self-isolates as Germany starts 'wave breaker' lockdown

New restrictions have begun across Europe, many greeted by protests

The head of the World Health Organization has gone into self-quarantine after someone he had been in contact with tested positive for Covid-19.

With the virus again spreading rapidly across Europe and elsewhere, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who is based in Geneva, made the announcement by Twitter late on Sunday night, but stressed he had no symptoms.

“I have been identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for Covid-19,” Tedros said in his tweet.

“I am well and without symptoms but will self-quarantine over the coming days, in line with @WHO protocols, and work from home,” he added.

Tedros has been at the forefront of the UN health agency’s efforts to battle the pandemic, which has claimed the lives of 1.2 million and infected more than 46.6 million people worldwide since emerging

He stressed on Twitter that “it is critically important that we all comply with health guidance. This is how we will break chains of Covid-19 transmission, suppress the virus, and protect health systems.”

Countries across Europe reintroduced or strengthened existing lockdown measures on Monday.

Germany went into “lockdown light” mode, with bars, cinemas, theatres, museums, fitness studios and swimming pools closing and cafes and restaurants allowed to offer takeaway food only. Meetings in public have been restricted to two households or no more than 10 people. Unlike during the first lockdown in the spring, schools and nurseries will stay open.

The new “wave breaker” restrictions will for now only apply until the end of the month, but the government is not ruling out an extension. On Sunday, the health minister, Jens Spahn, called on the public to prepare for “months of restrictions and abstinence”.

The chancellor, Angela Merkel, told a news conference on Monday that Germany was still some way off an end to the pandemic but if people respected the restrictions over the next four weeks “then we will be able to have the conditions for a tolerable December.”

“Throughout the winter months, we will have to limit private contacts,” Merkel said. “The light at the end of the tunnel is still quite a long way off.”

Italy will tighten its restrictions but is holding back from reintroducing a nationwide lockdown, its prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, said, as infections, hospital admissions and deaths rise.

Conte told Italy’s parliament tougher measures, including curbing travel between the worst-hit regions and a night-time curfew, were now needed.

Italy’s daily tally of infections has increased tenfold over the last month and hovered around 30,000 in the last few days, while hospital admissions, intensive care occupancy and deaths have also risen steeply.

“Despite our efforts … the evolution of the epidemic in the last few days is very worrying,” Conte said, adding that intensive care units would be overwhelmed in 15 of Italy’s 20 regions by next month unless tougher action was taken.

“We must intervene with more stringent measures,” he told the Chamber of Deputies, saying the country would be divided into three areas depending on the risk level, with certain places facing tighter restrictions than others.

Meanwhile, Portugal’s prime minister, António Costa, asked the country’s president to declare a state of emergency as a preventive measure to fight the spread of the virus

The last Covid-19 state of emergency, which under Portuguese law is limited to 15 days but can be extended indefinitely in 15-day periods if necessary, was declared by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in March and lasted six weeks.

“It is a critical moment and declaring the … emergency will reinforce the civic awareness of the sanitary emergency we are facing,” Costa told reporters, adding the move was likely to last much longer than 15 days.

The president was expected to proclaim the emergency in a televised address on Monday evening and then parliament would then have to enact it – both are considered formalities.

The weekend was marked by street protests against further restrictions on daily life, including in Italy and Spain, where the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, called for an end to “the violent and irrational behaviour” of a minority of people after demonstrations against the government’s decision to declare a six-month state of emergency.

On Sunday night more than 300 people gathered in the centre of São Paulo, Brazil, to protest against state governor João Doria’s support for mandatory Covid-19 immunisation and testing the potential vaccine developed by China’s Sinovac. The country’s health minister, Eduardo Pazuello, who is ill with Covid, remained in hospital on Sunday night after having been discharged from a civilian facility earlier in the day.

Anti-science sentiment was also on display in the US, where supporters of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Florida on Sunday night began chanting “Fire Fauci” – and the president hinted that he may do so after the election.

The hostility towards Dr Anthony Fauci, the US government’s leading expert on infectious diseases, comes after he angered the White House by warning that the coming winter would see the virus continue to spread. Two weeks ago, Trump suggested that Fauci was an “idiot”.

The Inspector -General of Police , Muhammed Adamu, on Tuesday , visited Lagos State Governor , Babajide Sanwo -Olu , at the State House in Marina .
Adamu lamented the extent of the damage caused by hoodlums who hijacked the # EndSARS protests against police brutality last month.
Briefing reporters , the IGP said he was in the state for an assessment of the police assets vandalised after the protest and to commiserate with residents.
According to the government , six police officers were lynched in Lagos , 36 critically injured , while 46 police stations were torched.
In a statement titled, ‘ Sanwo -Olu Receives Police IG Over Coordinated Arson In Lagos ’ , the governor ’ s Chief Press Secretary , Gboyega Akosile, said his principal commiserated with the police chief over the mob attacks on police personnel and torching of their stations .
“Sanwo -Olu intimated the IGP on the move by the state government to rebuild the razed police stations and offer scholarship awards to the children of the officers killed in the violence , ” the statement partly read.
Akosile also quoted the police chief as saying, “Lagos was the epicentre where the EndSARS protest took place and the number of destruction in the subsequent violence was more in Lagos than any other part . I came to commiserate with the Governor and people of the State. The destruction they suffered was uncalled for.
“The second leg of my visit is to see the police stations destroyed and boost the morale of our men in Lagos . We don ’ t want them to be demoralised by the event in which they suffered personal attacks . Policemen are trained to take such pain . Now that the event has happened , it shouldn ’ t discourage us from performing our constitutional duties . ”
Adamu said the scale of the destruction witnessed in Lagos and around the country called for the need by Nigerians to adopt standard protocols for public protests whenever they wanted to express their grievances against the system .
“It is very important to set up protocols that will prevent hoodlums to hijack peaceful protest organised with good intentions . The moment the protest organisers don ’ t have leadership, the purpose and intent of the effort would be defeated . As we have seen in the case of EndSARS protest , no economy will be able to bear the loss that we have seen in Lagos , ” the IGP was further quoted .
